The UK Konkan community organised a vibrant and joyful picnic on 14th July 2024 at Bushy Park in Hampton. Known for its expansive green spaces and historical significance, Bushy Park provided the perfect backdrop for this community gathering. This annual event, held on a sunny summer day, brought together Konkani speaking families and friends from across the UK. It served as a platform for reconnecting with cultural roots, enjoying traditional food, and participating in various recreational activities.
The event saw a good turnout ranging from young children to seniors. The diversity in age highlighted the inclusive nature of the event, fostering a sense of unity among generations.
UK Konkan’s volunteers arrived early and enthusiastically helped set up the venue, arranging tables, chairs and gazebo, ensuring everything was in place and ready for the day’s events. Their efforts created a welcoming and organised environment for all the attendees.

Our enthusiastic ladies – Mini, Sheela and Alice were at the registration counter ensuring attendees were all registered. On the other hand, Charlotte and Clara sold the T-shirts with the UK Konkan’s logo to the participants and everyone who wore them looked very elegant with a sense of belonging to the community. Gretta and Mini sold the Tombola and cone game tickets.
One of the main attractions of the picnic was the array of traditional Konkani food. Delicious biryani and Chicken chilly were served for lunch. Special mention to Sheela & Gratian for preparing raita, Kevin & Mini and Harry & Gretta for their well-presented fruit platters which were liked and appreciated by young and old.
The picnic featured a variety of traditional games, which were a major highlight for both children and adults. Sylvester, Kevin Edgar and Tom conducted several games for both kids and adults.
The picnic kicked off with a dodgeball game for all ages. The competition was between the 2 teams and Team 2 won the dodgeball game with highest points.
Sylvester started the proceedings with a Kids Strap Snatch Game for children under 7. This lively game saw the little ones eagerly chasing each other to snatch straps attached to their waists. The enthusiasm and laughter of the children set a joyful tone for the day.
Next, the under-10s participated in the Sandbag Throwing competition. The young participants showcased their strength and aim by trying to throw the sandbags as far as possible. Cheers and encouragement from the audience filled the air as each child gave their best shot.
A series of relay games followed, including:
Lemon and Spoon Race: Participants balanced a lemon on a spoon and raced to the finish line. It was a test of balance and speed, with many lemons dropping along the way, much to the amusement of the spectators.
Three-Legged Race: Pairs of participants had their legs tied together and had to coordinate their movements to reach the finish line. This game highlighted teamwork and coordination.
Blindfold Directions: In this game, one blindfolded participant was guided by their partner through a series of obstacles. Trust and communication were key to navigating the course successfully.
Walking planks: Team members communicated clearly, calling out steps and coordinating their movements. Ropes were attached to the planks for added stability. This game was enjoyed by participants and spectators and was a great way to foster team spirit.
The men’s volleyball match was a highlight of the day, drawing a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters. The teams competed fiercely, displaying impressive skills and teamwork. The match was filled with intense rallies, powerful serves, and strategic plays.
Men’s Volleyball was followed by a spirited game of throw ball from ladies. The game was energetic and competitive, with participants demonstrating excellent throwing and catching abilities. The camaraderie and sportsmanship among the players were truly commendable.
A special session was dedicated to Lagori, a traditional south Indian game. Participants formed two teams and played this nostalgic game with great enthusiasm. Anil and James were nominated as captains of each team. The objective was to knock down a pile of stones and then rebuild it while avoiding being hit by the opposing team. The game brought back fond childhood memories for many. The game was a true test of teamwork and remarkably both teams won the same points making them joint winners.
The final event of the day was a game of Tombola, conducted by Gretta. Participants eagerly awaited the calling of numbers, hoping to win exciting prizes. Gretta’s lively and engaging manner made the game enjoyable for everyone.
Both ladies and men enjoyed performing short reels, showcasing their creativity and enthusiasm. Their performance added a lively and entertaining element to the event engaging the audience and highlighting the community’s vibrant spirit.

The UK Konkans picnic at Bushy Park was a resounding success and reflected the vibrant culture and strong community spirit of the Konkani speaking diaspora in the UK. It served as a testament to the importance of cultural heritage and the joy of coming together in celebration. With enthusiastic participation and positive feedback, the event set a promising precedent for future gatherings, ensuring that the Konkani culture remains alive and thriving in the hearts of its people, even far from their homeland. As sun was setting, the organisers had to cancel many other activities.
